Doctor Dictionary

About 3 months ago I signed up to receive a "Word of the Day" through the website dictionary.com as a way to expand my vocabulary and, maybe even impress someone at a party with big words. The thing is, if I don't start breaking the words in right away into everyday conversation, I forgot about them and what they mean. So my new idea, is to write them down in a sentence and then use them as they relate to my life. Here are a few examples:

(August 29, 2006) Sui generis: being the only example of its kind; constituting a class of its own; unique.

When it comes to doing exhaustive, obsessive research on any monetary purchase, JP is sui generis.

No matter how many times I hear *Chris Weinke* embellish a story it never gets old. He is most definitely sui generis in that regard.

Even with all the talented running backs that have played in the NFL, my prediction is that Reggie Bush will create a category of his own during his career, sui generis.

*This is an assumed name, because the actual person would probably try to fight me.

(August 28, 2006) Aegis: 1. Protection, support. 2. Sponsorship, patronage. 3. Guidance, direction, or control. 4. A shield or protective armor (applied in mythology to the shield of Zeus).

Under the aegis of new head coach Mickey Matthews in 1999, JMU Football won its first Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.

The aegis that Blair has offered me over the years, through good times and bad, has been invaluable.

How does Doc Rivers receive a paycheck to be an NBA coach? I wouldn't even trust him to coach my Gold's Gym Summer League team. Under his aegis, Legacy would have been relegated to playing in "B" League games on Sunday afternoons.
